Choosing the Right Stone for Your Memorial
The stone you choose for your memorial will reflect your loved one’s legacy and the personality of the memorial. Our team is here to help you choose the best stone for your needs, taking into account the location of the memorial, the design, and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve.
Whether you prefer the timeless durability of granite or the classic appeal of sandstone or limestone, we offer a variety of stone options to ensure that your memorial is a lasting tribute to your loved one.
Granite is one of the most popular materials for memorials, thanks to its exceptional durability and natural beauty. It is resistant to weathering and is available in a variety of colors, ranging from classic grey to deep black, rich red, and more. Granite is known for its ability to preserve fine details, making it perfect for intricate inscriptions and artwork.
- Highly Durable– Resistant to weathering and erosion, ideal for long-lasting memorials.
- Variety of Colors– From traditional greys to bold reds and deep black tones.
- Low Maintenance– Easy to clean and maintain for years to come.
Sandstone offers a more traditional, softer look and is perfect for memorials that evoke warmth and heritage. It has a distinctive texture and can be shaped into detailed designs, offering an elegant, classic look. While it’s not as hard as granite, it still provides a lasting tribute when cared for properly.
- Classic Look – Timeless appearance that suits traditional settings.
- Versatile – Can be finely detailed and shaped into intricate designs.
- Natural Appeal – Adds warmth and a natural aesthetic to any memorial.
Limestone is another natural stone that provides a softer, more subtle appearance. It’s often chosen for its natural, grey-black tones and the ability to take on unique textures. While not as durable as granite, limestone has a unique charm that appeals to those looking for a more understated memorial.
- Natural & Elegant – Grey-black tones that blend beautifully with natural landscapes.
- Customizable – Can be carved with great precision for a personal touch.
- Subtle Appeal – Ideal for those seeking a classic, understated memorial.
Slate is a unique stone with a smooth surface and rich, dark hues. It’s known for its distinctive look and ability to display detailed inscriptions clearly. Slate is durable but requires careful maintenance to ensure it remains in pristine condition over the years.
- Elegant & Unique – Ideal for a sleek, modern look.
- Detailed Inscriptions – Great for clear, legible inscriptions.
- Rich Colors – Deep, grey-black tones add a sense of gravitas.

How to proceed with your memorial
At Humphries Stonemasons, we understand that the process of choosing and installing a memorial can be overwhelming. To make things easier, we’ve outlined the steps involved in creating a fitting tribute for your loved one.
The first step is to choose the right memorial. We offer a range of options, from traditional headstones to custom designs. Call Emily to discuss your preferences, and we’ll help you select a design that suits your needs. If you have a specific vision in mind, we can work with you to bring it to life with personalized inscriptions and artwork.
Once you’ve selected your memorial, we’ll create a layout and design for your approval. This will include your chosen inscription, artwork, and any custom features. You’ll have the opportunity to review and request amendments to the design until you’re completely satisfied with the final version.
In most cases, permission is required from the churchyard or cemetery authorities before creating and installing the memorial. We will advise you if there are any specific regulations or requirements relevant to the particular churchyard or cemetery where the memorial will be placed. We’ll handle the application process for you, ensuring all necessary paperwork is submitted correctly. If you’re unsure about the requirements, we’re here to take care of everything for you.
Once approval has been granted, we will schedule a time for installation. Our experienced team will handle all aspects of the installation process, ensuring your memorial is properly fixed and securely placed.
We ask for a 50% deposit at the time of ordering to begin the process. The remaining balance is due upon installation of the memorial. We accept various payment methods for your convenience.
